Hand-Forged Garden Tools from Homestead Iron.
Heirloom Quality for Your Garden
What type of garden tool should you buy? First, the tool needs to be strong and built to last. To help you decide what type of tool you need, we've put together this collection summary.
Weeders
Carbon blades are crucial for a sharp edge retention. The popular Scuffle Weeder and Cape Cod works by plunging the head just under the soil line and cutting germinated weeds down on the push and pull. The elegant Ho-mi is not just a hand plow, great for mixing, digging, and planting; but can also shave down those weeds. The sharp shooter is for precsion, narrow work. The weeding fork can plunge very deeply under the soil to get even the longest tap roots and the weed yanker helps lift weed roots right out of the ground.
Left Handed Tools
We understand that left-handed gardeners deserve tools designed specifically for their needs. Our collection includes the lightweight, single forge Ho-Mi hand plow which is the favorite tool in Korea. The Dutch weeder and Cape Cod are great weeders with the Dutch weeder giving you more surface area to weed with and the Cape Cod proving a safe side for tight spaces.
Premium Trowels
Trowels are essential for planting, transplanting, and detailed garden work. The harder and rocky your soil, consider a smaller head. For light, well amended soil, you can move a lot more of it with a large head. The unique potting trowel keeps the back of your hand away from plants that might scratch and the Bottle Opener Trowel is a great gift for the gardener that has everything.
Long Handle Tools
For larger gardening tasks and reduced back strain, our long handle tools provide extended reach and leverage. The scuffle weeder is great for keeping up with recently germinated weeds by cutting on the push and pull and the weight of the tool is on the ground. The V Hoe is great for heavy weeding with deep tap roots and the strawberry hoe is spectacular for precision weeding in established beds.
Hand-Forged Hoes
The Hawk's bill and Grub Hoe are the best for heavy duty work. The Hawk's bill has a curve the provides tremendous power when hacking down thick, woody brush and the Grub Hoe shines for chopping and hacking as well. The Batwing hoes allow dirt to spill over the top of the head and not have dirt build up behind the tool. The rounded shape of the Batwing means deciding how much of the hoe's head comes in contact with the earth. The V Hoe shines is our favorite and excells at penetrating deep into the soil, or turned on it's side for light weeding. We even put our starts in with the V-Hoe by stabbing down and pulling back.
Cultivators
Cultivators are great for breaking up compacted soil, mixing in amendments, and preparing seedbeds. The single tine is great for making furrows or even weeding. The crow's foot is amazing and scratching up a large area to broadcast seed and for tearing up old hay bales for mulch. The 3 tine is a heavy duty version of the crow's foot for preparing soil for seeding.
