This Comfrey, Castor oil, Cottonwood bud extract intermediary salve:
is strong for topical pain relief, reducing inflammation, repairing sprains, speeding the healing of broken bones, and other injuries. The scent is our favorite and reminiscent of pine and honey, with slightly sweet, resinous, and spicy notes. The texture is a perfect blend of rich, satiny castor oil balanced with the lightness of sunflower seed oil and finished with all-natural local beeswax for a smooth application. The non-comedogenic formulation ensures it’s not likely to clog pores.
Comfrey can initiate very quick healing, so make sure there is no infection, dislocations, or unset fractures so that the skin isn’t knitted together before clearing infection or the bones set incorrectly. Do not apply to breast when breastfeeding. Cottonwood Bud may trigger reactions in those with aspirin allergies. For external use only. Always do a patch test on the wrist for 24 hours when using any new products to test for allergies before using on a larger scale. Note that extreme warnings regarding using Comfrey Root primarily pertain to internal use, not external salves.
Crafting process:
Our formulation begins with a Comfrey root alcohol tincture to extract the powerful alkaloids. The macerated plant material is infused in Castor oil, allowing for the extraction of fat soluble constituents, and warmed gently to evaporate only the alcohol. The strained material is then blended into an oil infusion of Cottonwood buds and sunflower seed oil to create a powerful, nice feeling, and great smelling salve that helps with pain relief and long term repair.
Benefits:
This anti-inflammatory salve is ideal for muscle aches, tension, and injury recovery. Comfrey’s cooling properties complement the warming effects of Cottonwood buds, making it suitable for various conditions, including post-surgery recovery after risk of infection has passed.
Clinical Evidence:
In two randomized controlled clinical trials, comfrey applied topically has been found helpful in reducing ankle swelling and distortion and is superior to diclofenac (NSAID) gel in the treatment of ankle distortions. One arthritis study found that participants who used comfrey ointment for three weeks experienced improvements in pain, mobility, and quality of life.
Ingredient Highlights:
Comfrey, often referred to as boneset or knitbone, has a longstanding reputation among herbalists for it’s ability to promote rapid repair of broken bones and damaged tissues.
Castor oil is an ancient plant revered for its healing oil and its medicinal use goes back to 1600 BC by the Egyptians. It is rich in omega 9 fatty acids which greatly benefits the skin. It is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, penetrates the skin easily, and is quite effective at reducing pain and swelling. It has a drawing ability, meaning it can both cleanse and draw toxins from the skin and help to deliver medicinal properties into the outer dermis layer.
Cottonwood buds are warming and stimulating, but mild enough to use directly after an injury, especially with impaired circulation. It is great after straining a muscle, for overall body achy, or working old tension out of cold, tired muscles. Its antimicrobial and resinous buds are ethically harvested in the deep of winter for maximum potency. It excels at topical pain relief and naturally contains salicin, the compound found in aspirin that has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.
